How to Set Up Your Macrame Workstation
Learn how to set up your ultimate macrame workstation with everything you need in this step by step guide!
Below, you'll find all the tools you need including macrame racks, boards, hooks, scissors, and more.
Macrame Racks
One of the main things you'll need for your ultimate macrame work station is a decent rack.
The easiest way to go is with a garment rack. You can get an inexpensive one from IKEA for under $20 (I have one and they work great!) or you can grab one of these options below.
They range from the more utiliatarian side to ones that'll look amazing as decor as well.
A metal garment rack like this is a good, economical choice for your macrame projects.
You can hold large wall hangings on it (you'll want to grab some S hooks as well) and it's also great for making plant hangers.
If you get one with wheels, it's easy to move around your house!
If you have a more permanent macrame zone, or if you have a certain aesthetic you're going for, an industrial clothing rack like this one will fit the bill.
Here's another beautiful option for your macrame rack.
This one has wheels plus a handy shelf at the bottom, AND it'll look great in your space!
These are perfect to use with your macrame rack to hold your work while you're knotting.
You'll want to have some extras because it always seems like they disappear or you end up needing more of them, so I recommend stocking up!
Macrame Brushes and Combs
Another important tool you'll want to have in your macrame arsenal is a good brush and a good comb.
You'll want a metal comb, plastic ones will just break (trust me, I know from experience.) They're great for untangling fringe and combing out small sections.
A pet slicker brush works well to get that perfect fringe, especially over larger areas.
Check out these good quality options!
This brush is perfect for brushing out your macrame fringe, plus it's made of wood and comfortable on the hands.
Stainless steel macrame combs like these ones won't break, and they'll make quick work of untangling fringe on your macrame creations.
Storage
You can never have enough storage, no matter what type of craft you do!
Macrame cord, scissors, brushes, beads, rings, hoops, and everything else has to go somewhere. Here are some handy ways to store your macrame supplies.
What a handy and brilliant idea! These macrame rope holders hook over the bar of your macrame rack and keep your spool of rope in place while you're measuring out cord.
Plus you can hook your scissors on the end so you don't lose them.
Eventually, you'll start being over taken by all the macrame rope and string you've hoarded away. Ask me how I know...
A rope tree like this one is a perfect way to take advantage of your vertical space and store all your macrame cord in one convenient place!
This shelf is simple but will hold lots of macrame cord. It's also heavy duty so you don't have to worry if it can handle the load.
These little rolling carts are handy for so many crafts, and macrame is no exception.
The little hooks on the side are perfect for your scissors and macrame brush, and you can fit everything else you need for your project on the shelves and move it to where ever you want to work that day!
Desk or Table Top
Some macrame projects are much easier to do sitting down. Sometimes you need a table and it can be as simple as your kitchen table, or you can just macrame on your lap while you're sitting on the couch watching TV.
If you have a dedicated work space, one of these desks is a great choice because it has storage built in as well!
This is labeled as a computer desk, but with those handy shelves it also makes a perfect macrame desk!
Get yourself a comfy chair or stool and knot your little heart out, with all your supplies close at hand.
This craft station is perfect for macrame! It even has spool holders that would be perfect for the cord you use the most.
Plus, it can be reconfigured depending on your needs!
Other Accessories for Your Macrame Work Station
Now that we covered the big stuff, here are some other accessories to add to your macrame workstation that will make your craft life a whole lot easier!
These are handy for doing micro macrame or macrame jewelry projects.
Also, the grid is super helpful for any smaller macrame patterns that need to be spaced evenly.
Be sure to grab some T-pins to go along with it!
Use these with your macrame board to hold your work in place.
They work best if you put them in at an angle so you don't accidently pull them out while you're working.
Good scissors are a must for cutting through heavy macrame cord or making nice straight fringe.
I compared four popular brands of scissors to find the best ones for macrame, and you can see the results in this post!
Hint: there were two clear winners that have since become my go-to scissors that I can't live without.
Now that you've gotten your ultimate macrame work space all figured out, you'll need to stock it with lots of cord, rope, beads, and other supplies!
