Best Yarn for a Crochet Beanie
For this pattern, you’ll need a skein of good old worsted weight acrylic yarn.
I used “I Love This Yarn Prints” and this particular color is called Brushstroke Breeze. It’s such a lovely muted pastel print, and I love how it shifts to each color.
You could also use a solid color no problem. Or, if you want to use a different type of yarn all together that should work too, as long as it’s worsted weight.
I’d say some other good choices of yarn for this hat would be Lion Brand Heartland, Red Heart Soft, or Caron Simply Soft.
You could use just about any worsted weight yarn, but I’m just a sucker for a nice, soft one.
Down below is the written pattern and the video tutorial to walk you through.
If you want to see a handy chart with all the different sizes with chain amounts and row counts, it’s down at the bottom of the post and you’ll need to sign up for Grow to see it.

Attaching the Sides Together
With your hook still attached, lay your work so the hook is on the bottom right corner.
Fold the right side of the hat over so the short sides are lined up together on the left side, and turn the hat a quarter turn clockwise so your crochet hook is now on the top left corner.
Flip the whole thing over, so your hook is now on the top right corner. Now we’ll slip stitch the short sides together.
Insert your hook into the first st on the side closest to you, and then under the BLO of the st on the side furthest from you. Make a sl st.
Repeat that in all sts going down the row.
At the end of the row, cut the yarn, leaving a tail that’s about 24 inches long.
Pull the yarn tail through the last loop on your crochet hook and pull to FO.
Cinching Up the Top
Thread the long yarn tail onto your yarn needle, and sew a running stitch around the opening of the hat.
Once you get back to the beginning of the opening, pull the yarn tail to cinch up the hole.
Tie the two yarn tails together in a knot, and then I like to sew across the hole in a + shape just to make sure the hole is totally closed. If you do that too, tie another knot with the two tails.
Weave the ends in with the yarn needle and cut the excess yarn.
Pom-Pom (Optional)
If you want to add a pom pom, you can do that now.
I have 2 different tutorial videos for pom poms! Check them out below:
