Easy Ribbed Crochet Beanie Hat | Free Pattern

This easy ribbed crochet beanie pattern is quick and simple to make, and perfect for a last minute gift!

Or if you’re looking for a free crochet pattern to make donations to a charity, this is a great option. It’s warm, cozy, and not too chunky.

NOTE: This post is a work in progress.

Below, you’ll find the written pattern for an adult sized beanie. I’m working on the patterns for kids sizes too and once I get them finished I’ll put them down below.

I’m also working on the video tutorial, and printable PDF pattern for this hat, and as soon as they’re finished I’ll be adding all of that to this post.

I wanted to get this pattern out ASAP in case you want to use it to make hats to donate to Hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina (or any other charity) in time for Christmas this year.

Hat Sizing

I’m basing my hat sizing off of the chart below.

If you want to make one of the other sizes, all you have to do is make a rectangle following the suggestions in the chart and you’ll be good to go!

(I’ll have specific patterns for each size soon. Thank you for your patience!)

Makes 1 Adult Sized Beanie

Abbreviations (US terms):

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • hdc in 3rd loop only – do a half double crochet in the 3rd loop, which is the extra loop that forms on a half double crochet stitch. It’ll be on the side closest to you under the normal front loop.
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • FO – finish off

Adult Size

Ch 46.

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and next 36 chs, sc in next 4 chs, sl st in last 3 chs, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sl st in FLO of first 3 sts, sc in FLO of next 4 sts, hdc in 3rd loop only of next 37 sts, ch 2, turn.

Row 3: Hdc in 3rd loop only of next 37 sts, sc under FLO of next 4 sts, sl st under FLO of next 3 sts, ch 1, turn.

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have completed 56 rows. You’ll end on the hdc side (bottom of the beanie).

Attaching the sides together

With your hook still attached, lay your work so the hook is on the bottom right corner.

Fold the right side of hat over so the short sides are lined up together on the left side, and turn the hat clockwise so your crochet hook is now on the top left corner.

Flip the whole thing over, so your hook is now on the top right corner.

Insert your hook into the first st on the side closest to you, and then under the BLO of the st on the side furthest from you. Make a sl st.

Repeat that going down the row.

When you get to the end, cut the yarn, leaving a tail that’s about 24 inches long.

Pull the yarn tail through the last loop on your crochet hook and pull to FO.

Cinching up the top

Thread the long yarn tail onto your yarn needle, and sew a running stitch around the opening of the hat.

Once you get back to the beginning of the opening, pull the yarn tail to cinch up the hole.

Tie the two yarn tails together in a knot, and then I like to sew across the hole in a + shape just to make sure the hole is totally closed. If you do that too, tie another knot with the two tails.

Weave the ends in with the yarn needle and cut the excess yarn.

Pom-Pom (Optional)

If you want to add a pom pom, you can do that now.

I have 2 different tutorial videos for pom poms! Check them out below:
