Best Yarn for Crochet Baby Blankets
When you’re making a crochet baby blanket, it’s important to remember a few things.
It needs to be washable, it needs to be a baby safe yarn (without any small pieces that can be pulled off or lots of hairy fur that could end up in a newborn’s mouth), and it needs to be nice and soft.
Acrylic yarn is my personal favorite, because it’s super easy to wash and usually is pretty nice and soft. Plus it comes in lots of colors and is relatively affordable!
Another great choice is cotton yarns, which are also washing machine friendly. A blanket made with cotton yarn won’t be quite as warm, but in the summer that might be a good thing!
You’ll want to check the pattern you’re planning to make and see what weight and type of yarn they suggest, because it makes a huge difference in the finished size of the blanket.
Some call for worsted weight yarn, and some call for super chunky chenille yarn, and they aren’t interchangeable!
And you’ll want to make sure you get the correct hook size for the yarn you’ll be using. Luckily all the free crochet pattern choices on this list will tell you what to use.
Here are a few of my favorite yarns for baby blankets:
- Paintbox Yarns – Soo many colors! And it comes in different weights so it can work with different patterns.
- I Wanna Make a Blankie Yarn – This is a mega skein of super bulky yarn, one skein is enough for a whole baby blanket!
- Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn – This polyester yarn was pretty much made to crochet soft and cozy baby blankets! The main difference between this and regular Bernat Blanket yarn is this one is OEKO-TEX certified which is awesome.
