This is a simple pattern and one of those fun projects that only uses basic crochet stitches and granny clusters. It includes the written pattern and a video to walk you through the whole process.
I recommend using cotton yarn for this project, although you can use acrylic yarn or other types of yarn if you want.
You can customize it to fit any size pet by adding or subtracting rows, and there are 3 cute border options to choose from!

Sizing Options
The best part about this pattern is you can easily customize the size by reducing or adding rows.
If you have a small dog (or a cat), you can stop at as little as 4 rows for a little bandana.
Or if you have a large size dog, you can keep adding rows until it’s the size you think looks best for your dog. I think maybe 13 or 14 rows would work for a really big dog.
My method for figuring out different sizes for these to fit is to do a few rows until I think it looks about right, and hold it up on my dog’s neck to see if it looks good and wraps around their neck far enough.
If it does, awesome! Then you can move on to the collar and strap portion and one of the optional borders.
You can also make the strap longer or shorter if needed. All you have to do is adjust the amount of chains you start with for the strap, either doing less or more. Then you complete the pattern as written.
Keep in mind, if you make the bandana bigger by adding rows, you may not need to adjust the strap.
As written, it ends up being about 5 1/2″ long, so you can gauge about how long of a strap you’ll need when you test the bandana on your doggie.
You want the strap to be long enough that you can comfortable button it around their neck without it being too tight.

Special Stitches
Magic Ring or Magic Circle (right handed instructions, for left handed, wrap in the opposite direction):
Pinch yarn tail between the thumb and index finger of your left hand with end of yarn pointing down, then wrap yarn around two fingers, going clockwise.
Wrap all the way around and cross the yarn over on the back of your fingers in an X shape, then hold the end of the working yarn in place with your ring finger.
Insert hook under the loop closest to your fingertips on the back side of your fingers and grab the other yarn loop and pull it through.
Twist the crochet hook toward you and upward. This will twist the loop of yarn onto the hook into a lowercase cursive “e” shape.
Insert the hook under the farthest back loop on the back of your fingers again, and pull the loop through the loop on your hook. That makes your first chain.
You’ll make 2 more chains to complete the chain 3 needed in Row 1.
Notes
Ch 3 counts as a stitch at beginning of each row.
Pattern as written fits a medium sized dog with a 14” neck.
You can add extra rows to make this bandana larger, or do less rows to make it smaller.
You can also customize the length of the strap by adding or reducing the chains for that part.
There are two options for how to start Row 1 below. Only do one of them.
If you opt for the chain 4 option, you’ll have a small hole, but there are holes on the whole bandana so it will blend in just fine.

Easy Crochet Dog Bandana Pattern
For Row 1: Only do one of these options!
Row 1 – Magic Ring Option
Make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as first st), (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ring. Pull short end of yarn to tighten. Turn.
Row 1 – Ch 4 Option
Attach yarn to hook with a slip knot, ch 4 (counts as starting ring + first st), (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first ch. Turn.
Row 2
Ch 3, dc into same st, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner sp, 2 dc in top of ch-3, turn.
Row 3
Ch 3, dc into same st, 3 dc in next sp, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner sp, 3 dc in next sp, 2 dc in top of ch-3, turn.
Row 4 – 9
Ch 3, dc into same st, 3 dc in each sp along first side, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in corner sp, 3 dc in each sp along second side, 2 dc in top of ch-3, turn. Repeat row until you get to 9 rows, or desired size.
That finishes the triangle part, leave yarn attached for next part.
Strap and Collar Section
Ch 21.
NOTE: For this part, I like to single crochet into the back ridge loop of the chain, also known as the back bump. You can do that, or if you prefer work into the side of the chain, either way will work!
Row 1
Sk first ch, sc into second chain from hook and each remaining ch, sc evenly along top edge of bandana, ch 3, turn.
Row 2
Dc in 2nd st and rest of stitches along row, ch 1, turn.
Row 3
Sc in same st and rest of stitches along row, FO.
Leave yarn attached for next part.
Border Options
There are a few different options for the outer border. You can keep it plain, do a scalloped edge, or add some tassels.
Option 1 – Plain Border
This one’s easy- Just leave it the way it is! All that’s left is to grab your yarn needle and weave in the loose ends.
Option 2 – Scalloped Border
Attach yarn in first granny space on opposite side from strap.
Ch 3, 2 dc in first sp, sl st into center dc of 3 dc cluster, *make 5 dc in next sp, sl st in center dc of next cluster; rep from * to corner, work 7 dc in corner sp, sl st to center dc of next cluster, rep from * to last space, make 3 dc in last space, sl st in last st (this is the st before the ch-3), FO.
Option 3 – Tassel Border
Cut 51 pieces of yarn that are about 5” long.
(NOTE: You’ll need 3 pieces for each space along the edge. If you make a smaller or larger bandana, count the spaces along the edge and multiply that number by 3 to figure out how many pieces you need.)
In each space, take 3 pieces of yarn, thread them through the space and tie an overhand knot to secure.
Trim the tassels so they are neat and even.
Attaching the Button
Use a needle and thread to securely sew the button on the opposite side of the strap. You want to sew it on the dc section so it’s centered vertically on the collar part.
No button-hole is needed, just push the button between the dc stitches!
Make sure the right side is facing up (the strap will be on the right side).
In Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this cute crochet bandana pattern and you used it to make your own pet bandana!
