How to Make a Slip Knot for Crochet (EASY Step by Step Guide!)

You’ll use a slip knot to attach the yarn to your crochet hook for the first step of all of your crochet projects.
It’s also important to know how to tie a slip knot for knitting and loom knitting projects.
You use a slip knot to attach the yarn to the first peg of your loom or to your knitting needle.
At first it can look confusing, but it’s actually super simple and you’ll have it down in no time!
Then you can move on to the next steps in your crochet journey, like making a foundation chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, and more!
You can make a slip knot with one yarn strand or holding multiple strands of yarn together, depending on your project.
OK, let’s get started!
Supplies You’ll Need
First you’ll want to grab some yarn and a crochet hook.
Since we’re only learning the slip knot right now, the size of your yarn and hook size won’t be super important, but I recommend using yarn that’s the right size for your hook.
You can figure out if you have the right combo by looking at the label of your yarn.
It’ll tell you what size hook is recommended to use with that particular yarn. Pretty cool, huh?
How to Make a Crochet Slip Knot
The first thing you need to do is find your yarn tail.
The easiest way to do that is to use the end from the outside of the ball of yarn.
If you’re feeling adventurous you can dig into the center of the skein and find the center end.
This may result in what crocheter’s affectionately refer to as “yarn barf”, but that’s OK, just stuff it back in. That’s what I do!
NOTE: there are different ways to make a slip knot, this is just how I do it.
I’m right handed so this is a right handed tutorial, but if you’re left handed and this feels awkward, do the same thing but on your right hand.
It’ll still works just as well!
Hold the end of the yarn in your left hand pointing down.
Keep the yarn in place by closing your ring and pinky finger over it to hold it, then stick out your index finger and middle finger together and wrap the yarn around them.
The yarn will be going down behind your fingers and back up in front. Now you have the first loop completed.
Wrap the yarn back around to the back of your fingers again.
Bring it through the loop of yarn on your fingers.
Pull the loop through and hold it with your right hand, then remove the yarn from your fingers.
Hold the ends of the yarn with your left hand and the loop with your right hand.
At this point you’ll have a loose slip knot. Hold onto the ends and pull on the loop to tighten up the knot.
The next step is to insert your crochet hook into the loop.
Now, pull the long end to tighten it up. You did it!
At this point you’re ready to do the first stitch of your crochet pattern.
You’ll be using the long yarn that’s attached to the skein as your working yarn to make the first chain stitch and whatever number of chains you need.
The tail of the yarn will remain hanging from your slip knot and you’ll weave it in and cut off the excess at the end of your project.
