Hemp bracelets are back! I remember making these when I was in high school and college and I didn’t even realize I was doing macrame!

These three bracelet patterns are super simple and you’ll be able to master them in no time, even if you’ve never made one before!

The types of macrame hemp bracelets we’ll be making in this tutorial are the beaded square knot, plain square knot, and the twisted half knot pattern.

I used a medium weight hemp cord for these bracelets. You could make them with a chunkier hemp cord if you like, but keep in mind you’ll need to start with longer cords!

Sliding Square Knot Bracelet Closure Instructions

I used the same adjustable closure for all three of these bracelets and it’s so simple to do!

To keep things from being repetitive, I put the tutorial for the closure at the end of this post.

So just follow the tutorial for the bracelet you want to make and scroll to the bottom to see how to do the sliding macrame closure!

Hemp Macrame Bracelet with Beads

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Hemp Cord
    • 1 piece @ 16″ long (center cord)
    • 1 piece @ 70″ long (working cords)
    • 1 piece @ 14″ long (for slider closure)
  • 7 round beads with a hole large enough to slide onto the hemp cord (mine were 10 mm)
  • tape or a cork board and t-pins to hold your work
  • scissors
  • craft glue

Step 1: String on the beads

string the 7 beads onto the center cord of your macrame hemp bracelet

String the seven beads onto the 16″ center piece of cord. You don’t have to worry about the spacing, we’ll get that handled in a few minutes.

secure the macrame hemp bracelet center cord to your cork board or work surface

Tie an overhand knot near one end of the cord and attach the cord to your cork board with a T-pin in the center of the knot. (Or you can just tape it down to your desk.)

Step 2: Tie the Square Knots

Take the long 70″ piece of cord, fold it in half and slide it behind the center cord that we just attached to the cork board.

Then tie the first half of a square knot around the center cord, making sure you have an even amount of cord on each side of the working cords (so it stays centered.)

Now tie the other half of the square knot.

Make sure this first square knot is pushed up against the overhand knot we made earlier.

Tie five more square knots. You’ll have six square knots total.

Step 3: Alternating Beads and Knots

Slide one of the beads up against the row of square knots you just tied. Then tie two square knots after the bead, making sure not to leave any space between the knots and the bead.

Repeat that with the rest of the beads, tying two square knots in between each one.

After you slide the last bead in place, tie six more square knots to finish the pattern.

Step 4: Finishing Up

Once you get the last six square knots tied, tie a half knot on whichever side will be the inside of your bracelet (like the first part of the knot when you’re tying your shoes).

Add some craft glue to the knot and let it dry for a few minutes.

Then cut the working cords close to the knot. Don’t worry, the glue will keep it from coming undone!

If you want, you can add a bit more glue to the cut ends and smooth them down.

Trim the remaining two ends of the center cord so they’re they same length, and then tie an overhand knot at the end of each cord.

trimming the ends of the cords even

You’ll want to make the end cords about three inches long each so there’s plenty of room for the sliding closure.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Hemp cord
    • 2 pieces @ 16″ long (center cords)
    • 1 piece @ 72″ long (working cords)
    • 1 piece @ 14″ long (for slider closure)
  • tape or a cork board and t-pins to hold your work

Secure your center cords by either pinning them to a corkboard or taping them down to your work surface (like I did here).

Then, fold your working cord in half and slide it behind your center cord like in the picture below.

Step 3: Finishing Up

Once you get the last six square knots tied, tie a half knot on whichever side will be the inside of your bracelet (like the first part of the knot when you’re tying your shoes).

Add some craft glue to the knot and let it dry for a few minutes.

If you want, you can add a bit more glue to the cut ends and smooth them down.

How to Make a Sliding Square Knot Bracelet Closure

OK, now that we’ve made these bracelets, it’s time to learn how to do the sliding adjustable square knot closure!

First, hold the two sides of the bracelet together, like they would be if it was wrapped around your wrist.

Then grab your 14″ cord, hold it behind the two overlapped cords and tie three square knots around them.

tie three square knots around the cords to make the sliding bracelet closure

Once you get the three square knots tied, tie a half knot on the inside and add a drop of glue to secure it.

Make sure you don’t accidentally get glue on the center cords because then the knot won’t be able to slide.

Once the glue is dried, cut the two ends close to the knot.

  1. Hi, I am new to Macrame and have found your site to be the most helpful of all the ones I have looked at. I do have a question. I have started out making the cinnamon lark’s head with the double half hitch knot. My questions are:

    1. Can I dye my natural cotton cord with food coloring
    2. If, I am going to make more of these for Christmas now, will the cinnamon scent go away by then?

  2. Hi!
when I make the spiral helix or square knot bracelet – one of my cords ends up way longer than the others. Any tips? The bracelet looks great but cords are super uneven at the end… Thanks!
