Rainbow Easter Bonnet Hat | Free Crochet Pattern

Rainbow Easter Bonnet Hat Crochet Pattern

Easter is right around the corner! My kids have been making me aware of that for a couple of weeks now.

My daughter is a big fan of rainbows and colorful things so I thought this rainbow Easter bonnet crochet hat would be perfect for her.

I imagine she’ll be wearing it any time it’s cold enough, not just at Easter time!

It makes me feel so good when I make them something and they actually want to wear it!

This hat will fit a kid around 7 or 8 years old.

Back of Hat

Now you have all those fun loose ends to weave in, I tied each pair that were in the same spot in a knot before weaving the ends in just for extra security.

Rainbow Easter Bonnet Hat knotting different colors together

Just a small example, but where the two strands come out at the same spot I tied knots, just in case (yours will have way more than that, I just didn’t want to make the whole hat twice ;-))

-Make 2 braids-

Cut 6 strands of white yarn that are 16 inches long for each braid. Fold the 6 strands in half so you have 12 strands that are 8 inches long.

Use your crochet hook and pull the looped end through one of the brim corners and then pull the other end of the yarn strands through the loop and tighten to secure.

Attach your braid yarn at the corner of the brim.

Then, separate the yarn for braiding. There should be 4 strands in each of the three sections. Braid until you get about 4 1/2 inches long, then tie an overhand knot at the end to secure.

Trim the ends close to the knot.

-Make Tassels-

Use all the different colors of yarn except white.

I used my hand to make the tassels, but if you have a different method go ahead and do what works best for you.

I wrapped all 5 strands of yarn around my 4 fingers 4 times, then I took a piece of white yarn that was probably 8 inches long or so and stuck it through the loops at the top of my hand, pulled the loops off my fingers and tied the white yarn into a square knot.

Then, I used a piece of pink yarn and tied it around the top part of the tassel and then wrapped it around 3 or 4 more times and tied it again to make sure it was really secure.

After that either use a small crochet hook or thread the ends onto a tapestry needle and pull the ends down through the band you just created so it will blend in with the other tassel ends.

Trim all the ends even and it’s done, just make another one!

-Attaching the tassels-

Thread the white yarn from the top of one of the colorful tassels you made onto a tapestry needle. Insert the needle into the bottom of the knot at the end of the braid and pull it up through the top of the knot at the base of the braid.

Remove the needle and wrap the ends around the base of the braid a few times and then secure at the back with a secure knot.

Re-thread ends onto the needle and feed it back down through the knot at the base of the braid and then trim the ends to the same length of the other white ends under the knot.

Repeat on the other side.

I trimmed the ends of the braid under the knot really short, make sure you're knot is super tight.

-Make the Pom Pom-

Use all the different colors of yarn except white. I used my hand to make this pom pom, but if you have a pom pom maker or another preferred method, go ahead and use it. Click here for a great tutorial for making a pom pom with your hand.

Securely attach your pom pom onto the top of your hat, then weave in the ends.
