Best Yarn for Chunky Crochet Blankets

For this blanket, I used Big Twist Plush from Joann in the color Cardamom.

finished chunky crochet throw blanket

I absolutely love this color, it’s sort of a burn orange brownish hue.

If you don’t have a Joann near you, that’s OK!  You could also use Bernat Blanket yarn for this pattern, or a similar size 6 bulky polyester yarn.

I haven’t tried this pattern with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, but I suppose it would work.  The texture is different but it is a size 6 bulky yarn, so it’s worth a shot if you want to try it.

You’ll just need a size 6 yarn that works with a size 10 mm crochet hook.  And I would use something easily washable to make your life easier!

Custom Blanket Sizing

The size of this blanket is approx. 74 inches by 52 inches.  It’s an oversize throw blanket that’s big enough for two people to snuggle up under.

Or, if you have a tall person in your family, it’ll be big enough to keep him AND his toes warm! (My 6’4″ hubby approves of this blanket 😉

In case you decide to go for Bernat Blanket yarn, just know that it is slightly thinner than the yarn I used, so your blanket will turn out a little bit smaller.

If you get the chain done and you feel like it needs to be wider, just go ahead and add more chains until you’re happy with the width, and keep in mind the border will add about 3 inches.

And once you get all the rows done, if you think it needs to be longer, just keep on going until it’s the length you want.  The border will add 3 inches to the length, too.

This pattern is so simple that it’s incredibly easy to make it in different sizes and get whatever custom size you need.

I also have a baby blanket version of this pattern that you can check out.  I used a different yarn for that tutorial, but you can use the same type of yarn used in this pattern and it should work just fine.

The size might be slightly different, but it’ll be very close.

Blanket

Attach yarn to your hook with a slip knot.

FOUNDATION ROW: Ch 93 times.

starting chain

ROW 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and rest of chs, ch 2, turn. (91 sts)

For row 1, you’ll be half double crocheting in the 3rd chain from the hook, and those 2 chains you’re skipping are your turning chain.

Once you get to the end of the foundation chain row, chain 2 times and turn.

ROW 2 – 82: Hdc in BLO of each st, ch 2, turn. (91 sts)

For the rest of the rows, you’ll be working in the Back Loop Only.

That means you’ll skip the front loop and insert your hook only under the back loop, which is the loop furthest from you.

inserting hook under the back loop only

Continue working in the BLO for all the rest of the rows of the main blanket.  (Not the border, though.)

You’ll just repeat row 2 for all the remaining rows of the entire blanket.

Adding more yarn when you run out

This is my favorite way to add more yarn when you run out.

Start the next half double crochet and get to the point where you have 3 loops on your hook.

Then loop the new yarn onto your hook and pull that through the 3 loops.

joining a new skein of yarn

Go ahead and do a few more hdc going down the row just to get everything anchored really well, and then go back and tie a knot with the two ends of the yarn.

tying yarn tails together when joining yarn

When you finish the blanket, you’ll come back and weave those ends in.

Or you can do it now if you want, just make sure you leave a decent length yarn tail and weave it in well so nothing comes undone in the wash.

I usually leave at least a 6 inch tail, just to be safe.

Ruffle Border

SIDE 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in side of 1st row, 3 dc in side of each remaining row.

Once you finish your last blanket row, chain 3 and then you’ll be doing 2 double crochets in the side of the first row because the chain 3 counts as one double crochet.

You’ll make 3 double crochets in the side of the rest of the rows until you reach the corner.

three double crochets in one stitch for border

I try to go under at least 2 loops on the side of the row, but it isn’t critical.

It’s kind of tricky to tell where to put your hook exactly, but as long as it’s on the side of each row, you should be good.

SIDE 2: (Turn corner) 2 dc in each st down row.

You don’t have to do anything special at the corners, just turn your work and continue down the next side.

For side 2, you’ll make 2 double crochets in each stitch, because they’re closer together and that will make it look more like the first side.

SIDE 3: (Turn corner) 3 dc in side of each row.

Again, just turn the corner and work 3 double crochets in the side of each row.

SIDE 4: (Turn corner) 2 dc in each st, sl st to top of ch 3 to join, FO.

Turn the corner, and make 2 double crochets in each stitch going down this last side.

At the end of the row, slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 7 inches long or so, and pull the yarn tail through the last loop on your hook and pull it to tighten.

Weave in all loose ends with tapestry needle.
