It uses super bulky yarn and a pillow insert and it seriously couldn’t be any easier to make a bunch of cozy, crochet throw pillows to add to your home decor.
You can make them in all kinds of different colors and put these cozy crochet pillows all over your house!
Can I make this pillow in different sizes?
Why yes, yes you can!
For the tutorial below, I’m using a 17″ x 17″ pillow form.
But the cool thing is this simple pattern is really easy to customize to whatever size square or rectangular pillow you would like.
All you need to do is make a chain that’s the width of your pillow.
Then, go ahead and do the first row of single crochet (you’ll start in the second chain from your hook so you’ll have one less single crochet than you had chains.)
Check again and make sure it’s exactly the width from the right seam to the left seam and no more. If it’s too big your finished pillow will look droopy. A smidge smaller is actually OK though.
Now you just need to make rows until the length is 2 times the length of the pillow, plus 6 inches to account for the overlapped envelope closure part.
It’s that easy!
Can I used a different yarn?
The yarn used for this pillow is a BIG chunky yarn. It would be hard to sub a smaller yarn weight without drastically affecting the finished size of the pillow cover.
This super chunky yarn is incredibly soft and cozy, and it's machine washable! Crochet projects work up in a flash with this jumbo yarn and a mega crochet hook!
But you could sub another type of jumbo yarn for this brand if you can’t find it where you are. Here are a couple comparable options:
- Loops and Threads Cozy Blanket
- Bernat Blanket Extra Thick
- Yarn Bee Eternal Bliss
What size crochet hook do you need?
For this pillow, you’ll need a super huge size T / 30mm crochet hook.
Previously, I used a plastic 30 mm crochet hook, but recently I upgraded to a beautiful solid wood version from Furls and it was so much more enjoyable to work with!
The wooden hook doesn’t make that squeaky noise the plastic one does, and it was a lot more comfortable to hold.
This beautiful wooden crochet hook is made from responsibly sourced wood and is perfect for crocheting with jumbo yarns or holding bulky or worsted weight yarns double, triple, or even quadruple stranded!
Tools & Materials
Crochet Hook:
Notions:
- 1 large button (approx. 3″ across, or you could use a piece of ribbon instead)
- 17″ x 17″ pillow form
Yarn:
- 3 skeins of Bernat Blanket Big yarn (I used Light Teal) you’ll end up using 2 full skeins and part of the 3rd one
Abbreviations/Stitches:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
Gauge:
2 sts by 2 rows = 4″ x 4″ inches
Skill Level:
Easy Beginner
Finished Size:
17″ x 17″ inch pillow cover
Notes:
This envelope style pillow cover is made to be removable so it can be easily washed.
The opening tends to gape open a bit, which is why I recommend adding a button to hold it closed. Alternatively, you can use a piece of ribbon to tie it closed.
When you run out of yarn from one skein and go to start a new skein, make sure to keep your yarn tails all on the same side.
That will be the inside of the pillow cover and the other side will be the right side.

Jumbo Free Crochet Pillow Cover Pattern
Row 1: Attach yarn to your hook with a slip know and chain 12.
Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, and remaining chs going down the row (11 sc). Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each stitch (11 sts.) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 3 – 22: Repeat row 2 for the rest of the rows.
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Sewing the cover together:
Lay the long rectangle on your table with the wrong side facing up (that’s the side with the yarn tails.)
Tie a knot in each pair of yarn tails and trim off the excess.
Weave in the ends if you want, or if you want to leave them you can since this will be on the inside.
Lay the pillow form in the center of the rectangle.
Pull one side up around the pillow so it’s about halfway across the back of the pillow.
Then pull the other side up so it overlaps the first by one row.
Now you’ll need to cut a piece of the same yarn we used to crochet the pillow that’s at least 2 times the length of one of the sides.
Tie the yarn in the left corner, stuff the yarn tail inside the pillow, then use your fingers to whip stitch the yarn to close up the first side.
When you get to the part where the envelope closure starts, sew through all 3 layers.
You’ll have 2 stitches in the middle that go through all three layers.
(Watch the video linked above if you need some clarification for this part.)
Then continue whip stitching until you reach the end of the row.
Tie a knot once you reach the corner and feed the excess yarn to the inside of the pillow.
Repeat that process on the other open edge.
Finishing
Sew the button on the back so it holds the envelope closure closed.
Remove the pillow form and trim any long ends on the inside and weave them in if desired.
Put the pillow form back in and it’s ready to use!
Washing Instructions
This yarn is made to be machine washable, so if you want to freshen up your pillow just remove the pillow form and you can wash the cover.
According to the label for this yarn: “Machine wash in cold water, delicate setting. Tumble dry, low heat, delicate cycle. Do not bleach. Do not dry clean. Do not iron.”
In Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this easy crochet pillow pattern!

I’m doing a 16” pillow so how many rows do I need, I thought maybe one less row than 22 rows for a 17”? Thank you for sharing your patterns ❤️😊
